The wedding season seems to get longer each year! Our first wedding reception of 2017 is in January and currently extends to October. Of course, it makes sense for brides and grooms to get the best possible deal when booking their wedding venue, and we’re told that there are some great deals to be had if you consider having your big day on a midweek evening or outside the main wedding season.
At the start of December we performed at Cockliffe House, and intimate venue just outside Nottingham. Ricky and Lucy had hired us back in April so we all had plenty of time to plan all the details. Ricky had opted for 3 x 40 minute sets, with guests arriving from 6.30pm. Despite some of the most challenging traffic conditions we have ever seen (over an hour trying to leave Birmingham), we nevertheless arrived on time, set up our equipment quickly and provided DJ music for the arrival of the evening guests.
When prospective clients ask us “is there anything specific you need to know in advance?” we always answer “has your venue told you about their sound limiter?” Now unless you’re a sound engineer or involved in the wedding industry, it’s unlikely you’ll know about sound limitation devices, but if you do a simple Google search on “sound limiter nightmare”, you’ll see various musicians and DJs complaining about these little devices which can cause havoc at wedding receptions.
Why? Because if the venue has installed a sound limiter in the room your entertainment is setting up in and the entertainer isn’t aware in advance, every time they play over a certain volume, the power to the room is cut. Yep, that’s right. So imagine your first dance – you take the floor with your partner. All your friends and loved ones are watching you. There’s hushed anticipation; the band strikes up, and then halfway through the first verse, the sound limiter kicks in and you’re plunged into silence. And this happens over and over again. Why? Because the entertainer didn’t bother to check and prepare for the sound limiter in advance.
Fortunately, if you hire HARD TO HANDLE BAND your first dance won’t be a nightmare, and neither will the rest of the evening, because we spend a good deal of time liaising with both yourselves and the venue so we have the information we need to ensure your evening goes without a hitch. More often than not, swapping our acoustic drum kit for an electric kit means that we can play at a sound limiter-friendly volume.
Ricky and Lucy certainly appreciated the fact that we had prepared in advance and a great night was had by all. The first dance, “Tenerife sea” by Ed Sheeran sounded great, as did “Use somebody”, “Dakota” and “Blame it on me”; all requested by the bride and groom. Ricky told us, “you were superb guys, thank you very much; everything sounded amazing and it was great to see everyone on the dance floor!”
Preparation is key. We’re dedicated to making sure you have a stress-free nights’ entertainment. We’re Hard to Handle band and this is what we do!
